Reopened on May 19th, the Arab World Institute pays homage to the greatest women artists of Arab music and cinema of the 20th century. The first of its kind exhibition that spreads over 1000 sqm celebrates their history and their contemporary heritage.
From Oum Kalthoum to Dalida, visitors will discover epic and astonishing portraits of the divas of the “golden age” of Arab song and cinema, through a journey abundantly nourished with often unpublished photographs, clips from movies or concerts, glamorous film posters, magnificent stage gowns, personal objects and rare interviews.
The legendary artists that have become timeless icons also include Warda al-Djazaïria, Asmahan, Fayrouz, Laila Mourad, Samia Gamal, Souad Hosni and Sabah. They are joined by today’s artists who took inspiration by their peers.
The exhibition not only highlights the glamorous side but also the stories of these Arab women fighting for independence and decolonization and the influence they had on the societies they lived in.
So emerge yourself into the old-world glamour represented by the Arab world’s greatest divas, when style was still true to its meaning.
