AN ODE TO THE PAST

AN ODE TO THE PAST

Azza Fahmy Jewellery continues to preserve heritage and culture through wearable art. Further magnifying the great influence certain individuals had on Middle Eastern music, Azza Fahmy launches “The Golden Age of Arab Love Songs”, immortalizing and preserving the biggest hits in the region throughout the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. With an abundance of great artists, Azza Fahmy Jewellery spotlights singers, composers, and songwriters that are eternally engraved in the Arabic music hall of fame.

Azza Fahmy worked tirelessly on creating a collection that felt familiar and nostalgic in its use of lyrics, but also genius in forging designs that surround the inscriptions rather than merely incorporating them. “The Golden Age of Arab Love Songs” is composed of 12 pieces, all fashioned using an excess of inspirations, spanning over a myriad of regions and traditions, such as Roman, Islamic, Ottoman, and Victorian, etc. each used to compliment the use of Arabic ballads.

The model wears the “Warda” necklace, “Nizar Qabbani” earrings and ring, and the “Fayza Ahmed” bangle.

A melody of cultures blend together to create the “Warda” necklace. Using an array of motifs, it is fashioned to mimic silhouettes found on an antique jug, located at the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. Close inspection reveals that the beading and leveled floral and leaf motifs, evocative of Assyrian petals, come to life; it is a true demonstration of impeccable workmanship, all together creating a multi-dimensional effect reminiscent of Ancient Egyptian pectorals. A piece so beguiling, it concludes with calligraphy, echoing the words of the poet, Abdelwahab Mohamed, “أوقاتي بتحلو – بتحلو معاك” – “You lighten up my days,” sung by the beloved Warda and composed by Sayed Mekkawy.
