In her second participation as a finalist at Fashion Trust Arabia, that will take place in Doha end of October, Qatari based designer Yasmin Mansour will present her latest and her first haute couture collection. Titled Kitabat, the 10 pieces are a unique and a meaningful collaboration with Qatari artist Bouthayna Al Muftah merging contemporary art and haute couture.
In Arabic, Kitabaat means writings; translating the concept of the slow paced and mindful thought process of writing and constructing narratives.
The Bouthayna Al Muftah × Yasmin Mansour collaboration presents a marriage of the artist’s books and printmaking with the designer’s couture craftsmanship to bring to life their vision of the modern Arab woman.
The Kitabaat series of dresses, capes, blazers and pants, accessorized with statement gloves, is a performance showing all different perspectives of each piece. Inspired by reading poetry, where a sense of ambiguity provokes deeper thought and the meaning is subjective and up to the reader, or in this case, the viewer.
The sculpted clothes much in line with the designers´DNA, are all hand screen printed. Different fabrics such as organza gazar, Italian mikado, canvas fabric, wool, and crepe, as well as leftover fabrics from Yasmin Mansour´s atelier and local souks in Doha have been utilized in the production of the highly esthetic and clean cut pieces.
“This project was an incredible opportunity for an exchange in knowledge within the creative field” says Bouthaina
‘Collaborating with an artist was a very special experience for me. We created a one of a kind collection where we transformed fabric into art that holds endless expression.’ Yasmin adds.
