23 Grand Slam winner Serena Williams has been named a fashion icon at the Council of Fashion Designers of America – CFDA Awards 2023 in New York.
“I explored fashion and style as a way to distinguish myself,” Williams dressed in a black gown and cape by CFDA Chairman, designer Thom Browne told the crowd. “In many ways for me, the tennis courts became my runway.” The tennis legend also studied fashion during her playing career and in 2018, launched her S by Serena clothing line.
After the likes of Beyoncé, Zendaya and Rihanna, Williams is the first athlete to win the award, considered the fashion industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. Williams was presented the 2023 CFDA fashion icon award by no other than Kim Kardashian.
