The history of the lipstick
The history of lipstick is dates back to around 5000 years ago. Though Ancient Egyptians, Sumerians and Indus Valley people used various methods, including crushing gemstones to decorate their faces and lips, it was the Chinese who first made lipstick from beeswax about 1000 years ago to protect the delicacy of lip skin. It was during the Tang Dynasty whn scented and flavored oils were added to the lipstick.
The popularity of lipstick grew in the 16th century in England, when women tried to imitate Queen Elizabeth I famous for her bold red lips and white face. The first commercial lipstick was made in France in the late 19th century. It was made of deer tallow, castor oil, and beeswax.
Initially lipstick was sold in paper tubes, small pots or tinted papers and was applied with a brush.
By 1915, Maurice Levy invented a lipstick in cylinder metal containers with a tiny lever at the side of the tube.
In 1923, the first swivel-up tube was patented by James Bruce Mason Jr. At that time, Elizabeth Arden and Estee Lauder started selling lipsticks in their salons.
The first Long-lasting lipstick called “No-Smear Lipstick” was invented by chemist Hazel Bishop.
By the 1960´s the lipstick had become a household name and must in every woman´s purse.
